Chris Waddle joined Tottenham Hotspur from Newcastle United on 1 July 1985 for a fee of £590,000, and scored twice on his league debut, a 4–0 home win over Watford on the opening day of the 1985/86 league season. Waddle immediately struck up an understanding with Glenn Hoddle and was a key part of David Pleat's 1986-87 Tottenham team that finished third in the league, runners-up in the FA Cup and reached the semi-finals of the League Cup. On 1 July 1989, after scoring 33 times in 138 league appearances for Tottenham, Waddle moved to French club Olympique de Marseille for a fee of £4.5 million; the third highest sum ever paid for a footballer at the time, behind Maradona and Ruud Gullit.
