The first of Michel Platini’s 72 appearances for Les Blues came in Coach Michel Hidalgo's first game in charge, a friendly against Czechoslovakia in Paris on 27 March 1976, and Platini scored his first full international goal with a trademark free kick in the 2-2 draw. Between his debut and his final game for France on 29 April 1987, in 72 appearances, 49 were as captain, and Platini scored 41 goals, a record at the time for the French national team. Captain of the French teams that reached the Semi Finals of the FIFA World Cups in both 1982 and 1986, Platini’s greatest triumph was when he captained France to success in the UEFA Euro 84 European Championship. Played on home soil, Platini’s impact on the tournament was huge, scoring nine of France's 14 goals in just five games, including the winner in France's opening match against Denmark, a hat-trick against Belgium, and another hat trick against Yugoslavia as France topped their group. Platini then scored the winning goal in France’s Semi Final with Portugal in Marseille, and the opening goal of the Final against Spain at the Parc des Princes in Paris.
