Born in Hexham and a product of Wallsend Boys Club, Peter Beardsley was released by Newcastle United, when on trial as a teenager. Manager Arthur Cox brought Beardsley back to St Jame’s Park, in a £150,000 transfer with Vancouver Whitecaps, and Beardsley partnered Kevin Keegan and Chris Waddle, as Newcastle gained promotion back to Division One in 1983-84. Sold to Liverpool, for a British Transfer Record £1.9 million in 1987, Beardsley returned to Newcastle in July 1993, signed from Everton for £1.5 million by manager Kevin Keegan. Finishing his second spell at Newcastle in August 1997, at 36 years of age, Beardsley had added 157 games and 56 goals to bring his career total for Newcastle United to an overall 321 games and 117 goals.
