England 1986 World Cup Finals shirt
Bobby Robson's England began Mexico '86 Group F with a disappointing defeat versus Portugal (0-1) on the 3rd June 1986 in Monterrey. Returning to Estadio Technológico three days later, England lost Captain Bryan Robson to a dislocated shoulder in the 39th minute and replacement Captain Ray Wilkins who was sent-off three minutes later. Playing the rest of the match with ten men, England held on to secure a vital draw versus Morocco (0-0).
Manager Bobby Robson was forced to make changes in personnel and tactics for the third Group F game against Poland (3-0). Peter Beardsley and Trevor Steven replaced Mark Hateley and Chris Waddle, with Steve Hodge replacing the injured Captain Bryan Robson, and Peter Reid replacing the suspended Ray Wilkins in Estadio Universitario. With 'playmaker' Glenn Hoddle now operating in a midfield 'pocket' protected by Reid, Hodge and Steven, England's Gary Lineker scored a World Cup hat-trick inside 36 minutes as England progressed with Lineker winning the Mexico '86 Golden Boot with six goals.
In the Round of 16 knockout stage, Paraguay were despatched in the Estadio Azteca, Mexico City with goals by Lineker (2) and Beardsley as England secured the win (3-0).
Estadio Azteca was filled with 114,580 spectators for England's Mexico '86 World Cup Quarter Final versus Argentina (1-2). In four second-half minutes, first by 'The Hand of God' and then with 'The Goal of the Century' Argentina Captain Diego Maradona scored two of the most famous goals in World Cup history. England substitute John Barnes terrorised the Argentina defence when introduced, making a goal for Lineker, and almost conjuring a Lineker equaliser but nothing could deny Diego Armando Maradona from realising his footballing destiny at Mexico '86.
