Bill Shankly signed Emlyn Hughes from Blackpool for £65,000 in February 1967, and “Crazy Horse” made his Liverpool debut on Saturday 4 March 1967 against Stoke City, in front of 48,891 at Anfield. The first Liverpool captain to lift The European Cup, after Liverpool’s 3-1 victory against Borussia Monchengladbach in 1977 in Rome, Hughes was also voted FWA Footballer of the Year that season too. Between 1967 and 1979, Hughes made 665 appearances for Liverpool and scored 49 goals, and captained The Reds to 3 Football League Championships, The FA Cup in 1974, a UEFA Cup and Two European Cups, winning his first trophies, the 1973 Football League Championship and the 1973 UEFA Cup under Tommy Smith’s captaincy.
