Aston Villa 1990 Third Retro Football Shirt
Aston Villa began the 1990-91 Football League Division One season with a new away shirt, and a new manager as Jozef Vengloš replaced Graham Taylor in the Villa Park hot seat. Vengloš lasted one season as the Villa manager but the Aston Villa 1990 Away Retro Football Shirt had another season to run. Villa Chairman Doug Ellis headhunted Sheffield Wednesday manager Ron Atkinson to replace Josef Vengloš, and in the summer of '91 the Ron Atkinson Aston Villa revolution began. In July David Platt was sold to Serie A club SSC Bari for £5.5M, and before the season kicked off Atkinson brought in Cyrille Regis from Coventry City; Dalian Atkinson from Real Sociedad, Ugo Ehiogu from West Bromwich Albion; Les Sealey from Manchester United; Paul Mortimer from Charlton Athletic; Shuan Teale from AFCBournemouth, Kevin Richardson from Real Sociedad and Steve Staunton from Liverpool.
On the opening day of the 1991-92 Football League Division One season Atkinson handed Villa debuts to six of his summer signings: Steve Staunton; Shuan Teale; Kevin Richardson; Paul Mortimer; Cyrille Regis and Dalian Atkinson but after 37 minutes Villa were trailing 2-0 against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. Villa debutant Cyrille Regis pulled a goal back in front of the travelling Villans at the Leppings Lane End just before half-time, and in the second-half Villa debutant Dalian Atkinson squared the game at 2-2 against his old club at the Hillsborough Kop End, and then Villa debutant Steve Staunton won it for The Villa in the 86th minute.
At Anfield in March 1992 Ron Atkinson's team wore the Aston Villa 1990 Third Retro Football Shirt against Liverpool in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup. Introducing the BBC Match of the Day live coverage John Motson called it the "tie of the round". Villa in yellow. A retro football shirt throwback to the early seventies Vic Crowe Villa teams of John Dunn; Brian Godfrey; Charlie Aitken; Keith Bradley; Fred Turnbull; Andy Lochhead; Willie Anderson; Brian Tiler; Pat McMahon, Ian Hamilton; Bruce Rioch, and Brian Little; Chris Nicholl; Ray Graydon and Sammy Morgan too. In a nip and tuck FA Cup Quarter-Final Villa started with Cyrille Regis, Tony Daley, Dalian Atkinson and Dwight Yorke all in the line-up but it was a second-half Michael Thomas goal in front of The Kop that won it for Liverpool. Within a year two of Liverpool's starting eleven, Dean Saunders and Ray Houghton, would join the Villa Revolution as Ron Atkinson completed his jigsaw ready for an assault on the first ever FA Premier League. Aston Villa finished 7th in Football League Division One in 1991-92 and Dwight Yorke top-scored with 17 goals in all competitions.
