Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona signed for Barcelona after the 1982 World Cup Finals for a then, world record fee. Considered the best footballer in the world at that time, Maradona, known as 'El Pelusa’, suffered serious injury and hepatitis, which meant he played in just 36 La Liga games, in which he scored 22 goals, before his move to Napoli in 1984. With Barcelona Maradona won the Copa del Rey and Spanish League Cup in 1982-83 and the Spanish Super Cup in 1983 too. The Camp Nou only got a few passing glimpses of Maradona’s true potential but his chipped goal against Red Star in the 1982-83 UEFA Cup Winners Cup and the goal he scored at the Santiago Bernabéu in the League Cup the same season, which even had the Madrisistas applauding, are long remembered.
