West Ham United 2000 Away Retro Football Shirt
FA Cup Fourth Round. Sunday 28 January 2001. Old Trafford. The Theatre of Dreams. Manchester United versus West Ham United, and against all the odds a Paolo Di Canio goal knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup. Di Canio, West Ham United captain on the day, scored the only goal of the game in the 76th minute, latching onto Frédéric Kanoute's superbly timed defence splitting, offside trap busting pass. As Di Canio slid the ball past Manchester United goalkeeper Fabian Barthez, Barthez was holding one arm aloft as if encouraging the linesman to flag Di Canio offside or maybe Barthez was trying to hail a taxi?
Going into the match, to paraphrase West Ham United Manager Harry Redknapp, The Irons were down to the bare bones. Goalkeeper Shaka Hislop was clearly struggling with an injury so the 2000-2001 Hammer of the Year Stuart Pearce took Shaka's goalkicks. West Ham's midfield trio was made up of a 22 year old and two 18 year olds but, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Michael Carrick, ably assisted by makeshift wing-backs Nigel Winterburn and Hannu Tihenen were too much for Roy Keane, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham. Before Di Canio's goal, West Ham's Hannu Tihenen, on loan from Norwegian club Viking FK, had cleared two Manchester United efforts off the West Ham goaline. Sebastién Schemmel, on loan from FC Metz, was equally impressive, and Frédéric Kanouté, although carrying an injury was superb in leading the line. Stuart Pearce and Christian Dailly marshalled everything. Paolo Di Canio led it all.
The West Ham United 2000 Away Retro Shirt is forever linked to the brilliant Hammers win in the FA Cup at Old Trafford, to the brilliant Paolo Di Canio goal, to the brilliant 9,000 Claret and Blue travelling away support in the South Stand at the Theatre of Dreams and, to this day Fabian Barthez is still waiting for a taxi.
