Aston Villa 1982 Euro Final Retro Football Shirt
The Road to Rotterdam began with a 5-0 UEFA European Cup First Round Ist-Leg win versus Icelandic champions Valur. Tony Morley, Peter Withe (2), and Terry Donovan (2) scored the goals in front of 20,481 in attendance at Villa Park. Gary Shaw claimed both the Villa goals in the 0-2 away 2nd-Leg win in Reykjavik. Two goals from Tony Morley secured Villa a Second Round Ist-Leg 1-2 away victory in East Berlin against BFC Dynamo and although Villa lost the return leg 0-1 at Villa Park the away goals rule saw The Villans through to the UEFA European Cup Quarter-Final. With Tony Barton now having replaced Ron Saunders, a 0-0 draw was secured in the Quarter-Final away leg versus Dynamo Kyiv, and Gary Shaw and Ken McNaught both scored in the Quarter-Final 2nd-Leg 2-0 victory in B6. On Wednesday 7 April 1982 Tony Morley scored in front of the Villa Park 'Witton End' in the 1-0 UEFA European Cup Semi-Fnal Ist-Leg win against RSC Anderlecht, and then Villa secured a 0-0 draw away in Brussels to progress to the final at De Kuip in Rotterdam.
In Rotterdam in the 1982 UEFA European Cup Final FC Bayern München were clear favourites, and after 9 minutes when Villa goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer was replaced by substitute goalkeeper Nigel Spink the odds on a Bayern victory shortened. Nigel Spink and Aston Villa then proceeded to defy, and overturn the odds. Legendary football commentator Brian Moore described the Aston Villa 1982 European Cup Final winning goal thus: "Shaw, Williams prepared to venture down the left. There's a good ball in for Tony Morley. Oh, it must be and it is! It's Peter Withe". Only six English Football Clubs have ever been Champions of Europe. Aston Villa are one of them.
