Aston Villa 1992 Retro Football Shirt
The FA Premier League. The first Aston Villa FA Premier League shirt. Villa manager Ron Atkinson signed Ray Houghton from Liverpool in July 1992, and then in September went back to Anfield to sign Dean Saunders too. Saunders made his Aston Villa home debut in Saturday 19 September at Villa Park against the club he had just left - Liverpool. It was a memorable debut. Ronny Rosenthal's miss in front of The Holte End is legendary. Ex-Villan Mark Walters scored a Marco Van Basten type volley to put Liverpool in front. Dean Saunders equalised on the stroke of half-time and then three second-half Villa goals at The Holte End from Dalian Atkinson, Saunders again and Garry Parker meant that Rosenthal's late Liverpool goal was no more than consolation. Aston Villa 4 v 2 Liverpool, and Villa were truely up and running in the race to be the first ever FA Premier League Champions.
In the next league game Dean Saunders scored another brace in the 2-3 away FA Premier League win against Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park, and followed it up with a third consecutive FA Premier League brace in the 2-3 away win versus Wimbledon at Selhurst Park when, Dalian Atkinson scored the wonderful goal, following a brilliant solo run and chipped finish, that was voted BBC Match of the Day Goal of the Season.
Aston Villa spent the inaugural 1992-93 FA Premier League season challenging for the title, and were top with six games left to play, but were eventually overhauled by manager Ron Atkinson's old club Manchester United, and finished second in the first ever FA Premier League. Dean Saunders top-scored for The Villa with 13 FA Premier League goals and 17 goals in all competitions. Aston Villa legend Paul McGrath No5 was the first ever FA Premier League era PFA Player's Player of the Year.
