Aston Villa 1988 Away Retro Football Shirt
Aston Villa manager Graham Taylor signed David Platt for £200,000 from Crewe Alexandra in late January 1988, and at the end of the season Villa were promoted back into Football League Division One. The top-flight of English football. Platt's contribution was immense including his fifth goal in ten games, a classic David Platt header from a Kevin Gage cross, when Villa beat promotion rivals Bradford City 1-0 in the last home game of the season in front of over 36,000 at Villa Park. The victory liifed The Villans above The Bantums in the table, and it was to prove vital. Villa's last game of the season was away versus Swindon Town at the County Ground where the 0-0 draw, a point, proved enough to clinch Villa the second automatic promotion place. Astonishingly, on the same day, Bradford City lost at home to Ipswich Town, and Middlesbrough lost at home to Leicester City. A Bradford City win or a Middlesbrough draw would've condemned Villa to The Play-Off's but, Graham Taylor had led Villa to automatic promotion at the first attempt. Back in the top-flight in 1988-89 Villa toiled but maintained their Football League Division One status, and also recorded three Second City derby victories too, as Birmingham City were beaten 7-0 on aggregate over two-legs in the Football League Cup with Kevin Gage and Andy Gray scoring in a 0-2 win at St Andrew’s and Derek Mountfield, Kevin Gage (2), Ian Olney and Tony Daley scoring in the second-leg in B6. Villa then demolished thier Second City rivals 6-0 at Villa Park in The Simod Cup with David Platt, Bernie Gallacher, Derek Mountfield, Alan McInally (2), and Allan Evans doing the damage.
