Aston Villa 1996 Retro Football Shirt
Gareth Southgate made his Aston Villa debut on the opening day of the 1995-96 FA Premier League season. So did Savo Milosevic, Mark Draper and Riccardo Scimeca, and in a scintillating first-half of football, Ian Taylor, Mark Draper, and Dwight Yorke with a penalty had The Villa 3-0 up against Manchester United. David Beckham scored a late, and brilliantly struck, consolation goal for United. 3-1 to The Villa. Brian Little was on to something. This was a very good Villa team, and an eventual fourth place finish in the FA Premier League proved it. So did winning the Football League Coca Cola Cup. The Villa Road to Wembley began with a 6-0 Second Round Ist-Leg victory over Peterborough United at Villa Park when Mark Draper scored 'that' volley at The Witton End, Gareth Southgate scored his first Villa goal at The Holte End and Gregor Rioch - the son of Bruce Rioch - played for Peterborough United. The Posh kept the 2nd-Leg to 1-1 at London Road. Villa victories against Stockport County, QPR, and Wolverhampton Wanderers meant a 1996 Football League Coca Cola Cup Semi-Fnal versus The Arsenal, and although Villa went on to beat Leeds United in the final at Wembley, the cup was won in the semi-final 1st-Leg at Highbury when, Denis Bergkamp had Arsenal two-up after half an hour. Dwight Yorke halved the deficit in front of The Arsenal North Bank on 39 minutes, and squared it under The Highbury Clock on 72 minutes. Two away goals at Highbury meant the goalless draw in the 2nd-Leg at Villa Park sent Villa to Wembley. Leeds United were never really in the game in the final as Villa bossed Wembley. Savo Milosevic, Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke scored the Aston Villa Claret and Blue goals, and Villa Captain Andy Townsend lifted the Football League Cup, and the Alan Hardaker Trophy too.
