Aston Villa 1998 Away Retro Football Shirt
Aston Villa manager, and Holte End hero, Brian Little signed Stan Collymore from Liverpool for £7 million in the summer of 1997, giving Villa a strike force rosta of Stan Collymore, Dwight Yorke, Savo Milošević and Julian Joachim for the 1997-98 FA Premier League season. Captained by Gareth Southgate, when this Villa team went to Barnsley for the sixth game of the season at Oakwell they were bottom of the league but, Villa were about to climb off the foot of the table with a convincing 0-3 away victory in South Yorkshire. Ugo Ehiogu opened the scoring on 25 minutes then, assisted by Stan Collymore, Mark Draper added a second on 50 minutes, and Dwight Yorke set up Ian Taylor for the third Villa goal on 72 minutes. With Villa 13th in the FA Premier League table Brian Little resigned in February 1988 to be replaced by Ex-Villan John Gregory, and Villa ultimately finishihed 7th in the FA Premier League. Aston Villa reached the Quarter-Final of the UEFA Cup too after victories against Bordeaux, Athletic Bilbao, and Steaua Bucharest before falling to Atlético Madrid on the away goals rule. Dwight Yorke top-scored with 14 goals in all competitions, and John Gregory handed Gareth Barry his Villa debut in the penultimate FA Premier League game of the season when goals by Dwight Yorke, Lee Hendrie and Julian Joachim gave Villa a 1-3 away win against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
