Chelsea began 1993-94 with a new Player-Manager, Glenn Hoddle. A new captain, Dennis Wise, and a new shirt. Gavin Peacock was recruited from Newcastle United for a transfer fee of £1.25M and as The FA Premier League introduced names and squad numbers on shirts, Peacock was allocated the No10.
After a slow start to the season The Blues improved after signing striker Mark Stein for £1.5M from Stoke City in October, and Stein would go on to create an FA Premier League record of scoring in 7 consecutive games between December and March, a record that stood until Manchester United's Ruud Van Nistelrooy overtook it in 2002.
Highlights in The FA Premier League included home and away victories versus Manchester United. Gavin Peacock scored the goal at Stamford Bridge, and in the return at Old Trafford Gavin Peacock again scored the only goal of the game.
In The FA Cup victories versus Barnet, Sheffield Wednesday, Oxford United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Luton Town took Chelsea to their first FA Cup Final since 1970, where possibly, just possibly, if Gavin Peacock's beautifully struck half volley hadn't crashed back off Peter Schmeichel's crossbar Chelsea might have achieved a season's third 1-0 victory versus Manchester United? Instead, inspired by Eric Cantona, Manchester United claimed the first FA Premier League and FA Cup double with a 4-0 win at Wembley Stadium.
