When Chelsea arrived at Elland Road on Saturday 24 September 1988 they'd lost 3 and drawn 3 of their opening 6 Second Division games that season. In fact Chelsea had won just one league game in the previous 11 months resulting in relegation from the First Division via the promotion/relegation play-offs, at the end of 1987-88.
Away to Leeds first half goals from John Bumstead and Gordon Durie delivered Chelsea's first win of what was to become a record breaking season, as The Blues would proceed to win the Second Division Championship scoring 94 goals and accruing 99 points. Captain Graham Roberts appeared in all 46 league games scoring 15 goals. Gordon Durie scored 17 goals including helping himself to 5 in the 0-7 away victory versus Walsall at Fellows Park but, Kerry Dixon led the goal scorers with 25 league goals.
