City started the Football League Division One season slowly before sticking half a dozen past Sheffield United in a 6-0 victory at Maine Road when Kevin Horlock converted two penalties, and Mark Kennedy, Shuan Goater, Paul Dickov and Gareth Taylor scored the rest. Shuan Goater scored three in the 4-0 demolition of Fulham at Maine Road in January with a left foot finish from a superb Richard Edghill cross at the Platt Lane End followed by two in front of the North Stand - an improvised right foot overhead and a poachers' header. City sealed promotion with a last day 1-4 victory versus Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park with Goater, a Christian Dailly own goal, Mark Kennedy and Paul Dickov on the City scoresheet.
