Having finished in 7th place in the Second Division in 1979-80, West Ham contested their fourth Wembley FA Cup Final against First Division FA Cup Holders Arsenal as the underdogs. John Lyall’s West Ham won by a single goal, scored by Trevor Brooking after Alan Devonshire’s run down the left wing led to David Cross’ shot being blocked and Stuart Pearson’s follow-up cross-shot being met by Brooking, who placed a header past Arsenal keeper Jennings in the 13th minute for the only, and winning goal.

Pearson, Devonshire, Ray Stewart, and Phil Parkes played in all eight of West Ham’s games in the cup run, and at seventeen years and 256 days old, West Ham’s Paul Allen became the youngest player to appear in a Wembley FA Cup Final. To date, West Ham’s triumph over Arsenal at Wembley on May 10 1980 is the last time a team from outside the top flight has won the FA Cup. The following season West Ham won the Second Division Championship and reached the Football League Cup Final.
