England 1996 European Championship Retro Shirt
Tournament hosts England were drawn in Group A in The 1996 UEFA European Football Championships. EURO '96, and designated to play all their Group Stage matches at Wembley Stadium.
England opened the tournament versus Switzerland with a draw (1-1) at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 8th June 1996. Alan Shearer opened the scoring, his first international goal in 14 games but, England visibly tired in the second half. Kubilay Türkyilmaz equalised from the penalty spot, and but for goalkeeper David Seaman, England might well have lost.
Scotland were England's opponent the following Saturday. The first and only time that the oldest international football fixture had been contested in a major tournament. Shearer scored, from a brilliant Gary Neville cross to put England in front, and then the game really changed in a remarkable 60 seconds - In the 68th minute David Seaman saved Gary McAllister's penalty and moments later Gazza wrong-footed Colin Hendry and volleyed home (2-0). Cue 'the celebration'. Shearer, Redknapp, McManaman, Neville and Sheringham as 'bartenders'.
Going into their last Group Stage match, England needed a draw versus Netherlands to progress to the Quarter Finals. England did much better than that. Everything football that Terry Venables eschewed came to fruition as England pressed, dismantled and destroyed The Dutch (4-1). Shearer and Sheringham both scored two as Gascoigne, Ince, McManaman and Anderton 'oiled the wheels'.
Winning Group A meant England stayed at Wembley Stadium for the Quarter Final versus Spain. Spain had two goals disallowed. Two strong penalty appeals denied, and England's No.1 David Seaman kept England in the tournament (0-0). Alan Shearer, David Platt, Stuart Pearce and Paul Gascoigne scored in the penalty shootout. Hierro hit the crossbar with Spain's first penalty. David Seaman saved Nadal's 4th Spain spot kick. England won on penalties (4-2).
FA Chairman Bert Millichip, allegedly lost the toss of a coin regarding kit, and England played in their designated change strip of Indigo Blue versus Germany in The Semi Final. The shirt is Iconic now. So is the match. Shearer, with his 5th goal of EURO '96 put England ahead within 3 minutes. Stefan Kuntz equalised in the 16th minute. The rest of the 90 minutes, and all of extra time were edge of the seat, nail biting, extraordinarily elite football minutes (1-1). England lost the penalty shootout (5-6).
At EURO '96, for 19 days in sunny June, the England football team united the country. Three Lions on a shirt. Jules Rimet still gleaming.
