On 30 July 1966, England’s greatest team reached the pinnacle of the world game, lifting the glimmering gold Jules Rimet trophy in front of 96,924 fans at Wembley Stadium. England started off with a 0-0 draw against Uruguay, then defeated Mexico and France to advance from Group One. The Three Lions beat Argentina in a tempestuous encounter, before dispatching Portugal and the great Eusebio in the semi-final.
Captain Bobby Moore Lifts the Jules Rimets Trophy
England faced West Germany in the final – still the most famous match in English football history. Sir Geoff Hurst notched a hat-trick and Martin Peters bagged the other as England ran out 4-2 victors.
England’s legendary captain Bobby Moore led his heroes up the 39 steps to the Royal Box, wiping his muddy hands when he noticed the Queen’s white gloves. He said just one word as Her Majesty handed him the World Cup: "Marvellous!"
England were World Champions.

The famous England 1966 World Cup Final No6 shirt worn by Jules Rimet World Cup winning Captain Bobby Moore at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 30th July 1966.
On the day, The Souvenir Programme proclaimed:
World Championship. Jules Rimet Cup. Final. England v West Germany. Saturday July 30. 1966. Empire Stadium. Wembley.
A day of intermittent heavy rain showers ending in bright sunshine. A metaphor for the game?
Unbeknownst to one another, the Manager's, Helmet Schoen and Alf Ramsey, had tactically detailed Franz Beckenbauer and Bobby Charlton to shadow, and cancel one another. Ten against ten then, in The World Cup Final?
West Germany scored first. Haller firing in after Ray Wilson, otherwise impeccable throughout his entire England career, uncharacteristically misjudged a defensive header. England were level on 18 minutes when Bobby Moore picked out Geoff Hurst with an instantaneously taken, quick free kick. Hurst glanced it home. An England World Cup Final Goal imagined in Cassettari's, rehearsed at Chadwell Heath, and 'made-in-West Ham'. Deep into the second half, as the rain showers returned, Martin Peters put England ahead. A 78th minute goal after Hurst's shot was blocked. England were set to win The World Cup until Wolfgang Weber slid home West Germany's 89th minute equaliser (2-2), and Extra Time. Alf told England to go and win it again. That's exactly what they did. Alan Ball found Geoff Hurst who's swivel and shot came down off the underside of the bar? Roger Hunt said it was over the line - a goal. So did the linesman. With England leading (3-2) and only seconds remaining, Bobby Moore picked out a fifty yard pass, on a sixpence, to Geoff Hurst who crashed the ball into the roof of the net. A Hat-Trick (4-2). Alf Ramsey had told everyone that England would win The World Cup in 1966. Alf was right.
