Northern Ireland 1982 shirt
Norman Whiteside made his debut for Northern Ireland in their opening 1982 FIFA World Cup Finals Group 5 game. España'82. Northern Ireland drew 0-0 with Yugoslavia in Estadio la Romerada Zaragoza. In the same stadium four days later Billy Bingham's Northern Ireland drew 1-1 with Honduras when Gerry Armstrong scored for the Green and Whites, and Felix Healy of Coleraine, replacing Northern Ireland captain Martin O'Neill on 77 minutes, became the first Irish League footballer to play in the FIFA World Cup Finals. That left Northern Ireland with 'mission impossible' to qualify from the group as really only a victory versus hosts Spain in Estadio Luis Casanova, aka la Mestalla, in Valencia would suffice. Gerry Armstrong scored on 47 minutes. Mal Donaghy was sent off on 61 minutes, and even though Sammy Nelson self-deprecatingly recounts having no idea what position he was supposed to be playing in, when introduced as a 70th minute replacement for Norman Whiteside, his experience was invaluable, and Northern Ireland held on to complete 'mission impossible'. Billy Hamilton scored a brace in the Second Round Group D 2-2 draw versus Austria in Estadio Vicente Caldeŕon Madrid but, in the same stadium four days later, and despite Gerry Armstrong's 3rd goal of España'82, France and Michel Platini proved too strong running out 4-1 winners. Northern Ireland were magnificent at España'82, and there was more to come in 1982 too when West Germany visited Windsor Park in November for a UEFA Euro'84 Qualifier, and were beaten 1-0 by an 18th minute Ian Stewart goal. Northern Ireland 1982. FIFA World Cup host nation Spain and reigning UEFA European Champions West Germany. 1-0 both to 'Norn Iron'.
