Northern Ireland 1986 shirt
Pat Jennings made his debut for Northern Ireland in 1964 in a 2-3 British Home Championship away win against Wales at Vetch Field Swansea. George Best made his debut for Northern Ireland in the same match. Pat Jennings made his last, and 119th appearance for Northern Ireland against Brasil in the final Group D match of the 1986 FIFA World Cup Finals in Estadio Jalisco Guadalajara. Captained by Sammy McIlroy, with David Campbell making his debut, Northern Ireland wore the shirt (with the 'FIFA WORLD CUP - MEXICO 1986' text embroidery) for the first time. Brasil won 3-0 with a brace of goals from Careca either side of a Josimar special, and Northern Ireland are still 'Shooting for Socrates' not least because he was replaced on 68 minutes by Zico. Northern Ireland began at Mexico'86 with a 1-1 draw versus Algeria in Estadio Tres de Marzo Guadalajara with Norman Whiteside scoring for Bingham's Boys. In the same stadium four days later Northern Ireland went down 1-2 versus Spain despite a Colin Clarke goal. At Mexico'86 Pat Jennings, Jimmy Nicholl and Mal Donaghy all retained their Northern Ireland FIFA World Cup Finals squad numbers from España'82, and the No22 Northern Ireland FIFA World Cup Finals squad number remained in Linfield with George Dunlop passing the baton to Mark Caughey for 'The Blues' from Windsor Park.
