Northern Ireland 1990 shirt
Northern Ireland wore the iconic geometric triangle design shirt for a dozen matches between September 1990 and June 1992. Yugoslavia visited Windsor Park that September in 1990 and left Belfast with a 0-2 UEFA European Championship Qualifying Group 4 victory. Then Colin Clarke scored in 1-1 Windsor Park draw versus Denmark in October before Billy Bingham's team finished the year with a 0-0 draw versus Austria in Praterstadion Vienna. Poland visited Belfast for an International Friendly in February 1991 when a Gerry Taggert brace and a Jim Magilton penalty gave Bingham's Boys a 3-1 victory. Qualification for UEFA Euro'92 became virtually impossible after a 4-1 defeat to Yugoslavia in Belgrade with Colin Hill scoring the 'Nord Iron' consolation, and a 1-1 Windsor Park draw versus Faroe Islands with Colin Clarke on the scoresheet. Faroe Islands were comfortably beaten 0-5 in the return courtesy of a Colin Clarke hat-trick and goals from Kevin Wilson and Alan McDonald. Northern Ireland then completed their UEFA Euro'92 Qualification campaign with a 2-1 victory versus Austria courtesy of Ian Dowie and Kingsley Black goals at Windsor Park, and a 2-1 defeat to Denmark in Odense with Gerry Taggert scoring again. 1992 began with a 1-0 International Friendly defeat to Scotland at Hampden Park and was followed by a 2-2 FIFA World Cup USA'94 Qualifying draw versus Lithuania at Windsor Park with Kevin Wilson and Gerry Taggert on the scoresheet. Then Northern Ireland did something only Billy Bingham's Northern Ireland could do. Northern Ireland went to Germany for an International Friendly and a brilliant Michael Hughes strike put them ahead in Bremen on 22 minutes. Eintract Frankfurt legend Manfred Binz equalised for the reigning 1990 FIFA World Champions but, Northern Ireland had surprised Germany again. That's something 'Nord Iron' had been doing ever since Billy Bingham played in the 1958 FIFA World Cup Finals 2-2 draw against West Germany in Malmö when Peter McParland scored the Northern Ireland goals.
