The FIFA World Cup Mexico 86. Jock Stein led Scotland to seccnd place in UEFA European Qualifying Group 7, and hence into the FIFA World Cup Mexico 86 Qualifying Play-off tie against Australia. The untimely death of Jock Stein just moments after his Scotland team had secured the 1-1 draw versus Wales at Ninian Park to qualify for that Play-off was a tradegy mourned by the football family worldwide. Football had lost a true great.
On the way to qualification Jock Stein's Scotland had to navigate UEFA European Qualifying Group 7 alongside Wales, Spain and Iceland, and it was the 3 points hewn out of the volcanic rock in Reykjavik that eventually proved vital. With the score stubbornly stuck at 0-0 Aberdeen midfielder Jim Bett latched on to Gordon Strachan's cross field pass and duly drilled the only goal of the game in the 86th minute. Earlier Aberdeen goalkeeper Jim Leighton had saved a penalty, and the precious 3 points won in Iceland meant Scotland would just need to draw versus Wales in Cardiff to progress.
Alex Ferguson took the helm from his late mentor Jock Stein, and against Australia in The FIFA World Cup Mexico 86 Qualifying Play-off First-Leg at Hampden Park, he handed a full international debut to Frank McAvennie of West Ham United, and what a debut. Seemingly striking up an immediate understanding with Kenny Dalglish, Frank McAvennie was electric in front of over 62,000 at Hampden, and drew the free-kick in the 53rd minute from which Davie Cooper fired Scotland ahead. Six minutes later McAvennie took a touch to control a defence splitting headed pass from Dalglish, then a second touch to guide the ball into the net for 2-0 Scotland. Jim Leighton played magnificently in the return leg in Melbourne to secure a goalless draw, and to secure Scotland's place at the FIFA World Cup Finals Mexico 86.
Grupo de la Muerte. The term "group of death" was coined by Mexican journalists for Group 3 of the FIFA World Cup Finals Mexico 70 which featured England, Brasil, Czechoslovakia and Romania. The term was popularised again after the draw for the FIFA World Cup Finals Mexico 86, when Uruguay manager Omar Borrás so described Group E, and along with Uruguay; West Germany; and Denmark; Scotland were in it. Preban Elkjær scored the only goal of Scotland's opening match as Denmark claimed a 1-0 victory. Against West Germany Gordon Strachan put Scotland ahead before Rudi Völler and Klaus Alloffs turned the game around for Die Mannschaft meaning Scotland would have to win against Uruguay in their last Group of Death fixture. La Celeste made sure it could never happen by scratching and spoiling they're way to the 0-0 draw they needed to progress at the expense of Scotland. Alex Ferguson resigned immediately after Scotland's elimination from the FIFA World Cup Finals Mexico 86 to be replaced by the man who, at Argentina 78, had prophetically advised Ally MacLeod that Peru were going to be a problem. Step forward Andy Roxburgh.
