The FIFA World Cup España '82. Jock Stein led Scotland to qualification by finishing top of UEFA Qualifying Group 6 ahead of Northern Ireland; Sweden; Portugal and Israel. Jock's team only lost one game and they'd already secured qualification for Scotland's third consecutive FIFA World Cup Finals by then. John Robertson was Scotland's leading goalscorer during the qualifying campaign with three goals. All of them were penalties.

With qualification secure, Scotland hosted the Netherlands in an International Friendly. Official Programme 60p. Scotland v Holland. Tuesday March 23rd, at Hampden Park, 8pm. The picture on the cover shows Asa Hartford, in Argentina 78, dropping a shoulder and sending Jan Poortvliet on his way to plug the wrong dike, and in 1982 Scotland took up where they'd left off with the Dutch four years earlier in Mendoza. Frank Gray sent Hans van Breukelen the wrong way from the spot on 13 minutes. Dalglish made it 2-0 on 20 minutes, and even though Wim Kieft scored for the Dutch, Scotland won 2-1 in front of over 70,000 at Hampden Park.

At The FIFA World Cup España 82, Scotland were drawn in Group 6 with New Zealand, Brasil and Soviet Union and the opening match was in Málaga versus New Zealand. Scotland won 5-2. Kenny Dalglish opened the scoring. John Wark added a brace but, in ten second half minutes, New Zealand scored twice. John Robertson scored Scotland's 4th and Steve Archibald made it 5-2 but, unbeknownst to anyone in the moment, the damage had been done. Against Brasil David Narey put Scotland into the lead on 18 minutes before goals from Zico, Oscar, Éder and Falcāo saw Brasil run out 4-1 winners in Estadio Benito Villamarín, the home of Real Betis in Seville, meaning Scotland would have to beat Soviet Union in their last Group 6 match back in Málaga. Dalglish was injured and unavailable for the deciding match but, on 15 minutes Joe Jordan did what Joe Jordan always did, and scored in The World Cup Finals for Scotland. Chivadze equalised on 51 minutes and with the match and qualification for the Second Round in the balance, a mix-up between Alan Hansen and Willie Miller allowed Shengelia to race away to score and leave Scotland needing to find two goals in the final six minutes. Graeme Souness found one but it wasn't enough, and at 2-2 Scotland were eliminated on goal difference. The difference? The 2 goals conceded in that first match versus New Zealand.
