The FIFA World Cup Italia '90. Andy Roxburgh's Scotland qualified by finishing 2nd in UEFA Qualifying Group 5 behind Yugoslavia and ahead of France, Norway and Cyprus to make it five consecutive FIFA World Cup Finals qualifications for The Tartan Army:- WM74; Argentina78; España82; Mexico86, and now Italia90. Maurice Johnston was the leading goalscorer in UEFA Qualifying Group 5 netting half of Scotland's dozen qualification gaols, and none more important than the brace the FC Nantes striker scored in a vital 2-0 victory in the March 1989 UEFA Group 5 qualifier against France witnessed by over 65,000 fans at Hampden Park.

Diego Armando Maradona scored his very first senior international goal for Argentina against Scotland at Hampden Park in June 1979. El Diego coached La Albiceleste for the very first time at Hampden Park in November 2008.  Disappointingly for the 51,537 at Hampden Park on the evening of Wednesday 28 March 1990, the Argentina No10 was absent when Scotland lined up for a pre-Italia '90 international friendly versus the World Champions. Carlos Bilardo was still able to select 5 members of the Argentina team who had won The FIFA World Cup Final Mexico86:- Nery Pumpido; Oscar Ruggeri; Sergio Batista and two of the goalscorers from the Estadio Azteca 3-2 victory versus West Germany:- Jorge Valdano and Jorge Burruchaga. Future Dens Park and Ibrox favourite Claudio Caniggia was in the Argentina team too. In Glasgow that night Stuart McKimmie scored the only goal of the game. Borussia Dortmund midfielder Murdo MacLeod crossed from the left, Bayern Munich centre-forward Alan McInally helped it on, and the Aberdonian right-back arrowed a right foot drive across Nery Pumpido and into the top corner. Three months before Italia '90, playing in a 3-5-2 formation, with Murdo MacLeod and Stuart McKimmie superb in the wing-back positions, and with Craig Levein, Stuart McCall and Robert Fleck making their senior international debuts, Scotland had beaten the world champions.

At The FIFA World Cup Italia '90, Scotland were drawn in Group C with Costa Rica, Sweden, and Brasil. Scotland began against Costa Rica but went down 0-1 in Stadio Luigi Ferraris, the Marassi home of both Genoa CFC and UC Sampdoria . Juan Cayasso scored the Costa Rica goal on 49 minutes, earning Costa Rica the two points for the win, and earning Cayasso a post Italia '90 move to Stuttgarter Kickers. A goal from Stuart McCall and a Mo Johnston penalty delivered Scotland a 2-1 victory in the second Group C match versus Sweden, meaning that, to progress to the knockout stages for the very first time, Scotland would need to match the result that Willie Ormond and his Scotland WM74 team posted at the Waldstadion Frankfurt 16 years earlier. A draw with Brasil. What a game. A tight game. An open game. A canny game. Scotland were magnificent, and so were Brasil. With 10 minutes left on the clock, the game was goalless, and Scotland were edging  towards qualification until on 83 minutes, Torino FC striker Luiz Antônio Corrêa da Costa, aka Müller, tapped home a loose ball after Jim Leighton had somehow got something on a 30 yard message from SSC Napoli midfielder Alēmao, and then somehow reacted to thwart the follow up attempt of SSC Napoli striker Careca. Before that, Dunga fly-kicked Roy Aitken's header off the line. After that, Claudio Tafferel somehow got something on Mo Johnston's half-volley. Italia '90. Wednesday 20 June. Lo Stadia Delle Alpi. Scotland 0 - 1 Brasil.
