Scotland 1992 Away Retro Football Shirt
Scotland topped UEFA European Championship Qualifying Group 2 ahead of Switzerland, Romania, Bulgaria and San Marino to take The Tartan Army to their first ever UEFA European Championship Finals. EURO '92 in Sweden. Ally McCoist top scored in qualification with 4 goals. Gordon Durie scored 3 including the second goal in the 0-2 victory in Stadio Olimpico Serravelle in May 1991 when Scotland beat San Marino. Gordon Strachan had opened the scoring from the spot after Pat Nevin had drawn a 63rd minute penalty. It would be the first of four occasion, to date, when Scotland would record a 0-2 win in The Principality. It would be the first and only occasion when Scotland would wear the Scotland 1992 Away Retro Football Shirt. The shirt is a Tartan Army 'One-Off'.
At EURO '92, Scotland were drawn in Group B alongside defending EURO '88 champions the Netherlands, the CIS (Not the Co-Operative Insurance Society but, the Confederation of Independent States. The successor transitionary nation of the Soviet Union team who were the EURO '88 runners-up to the Dutch), and Italia '90 FIFA World Champions Germany. Helluva Group.
On 12 June 1992 Scotland began their EURO '92 campaign in the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg against the reigning European champions, and it took the AC Milan trio of Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten and Frank Rijkaard to set up Ajax striker Denis Bergkamp to prod the only goal of the game for the Oranje in the 76th minute. Three days later Scotland faced World Champions Germany in Idrottsparken Norrkoping. Andy Roxburgh's team were outstanding against the world champions but, on 24 minutes Mattias Sammer and Jürgen Klinsmann combined to tee up Karl-Heinz Reidle for a smart right foot finish, and on 47 minutes a Stefan Effenberg right wing cross ballooned off a defensive block from Maurice Malpas, and then took a freakish trajectory that sailed above, over and across Andy Goram in the Scotland goal before dropping under the crossbar and into the net. Against the Netherlands, Scotland deserved the draw. Against Germany, Scotland deserved the win. Fine margins. Scotland's third and final EURO '92 Group B match was against a CIS team that included Rangers players Oleh Kuznetsov and Alexei Mikhailichenko. Paul McStay scored on 6 minutes, Brian McClair doubled the lead on 17 minutes and Gary McAllister completed a superb 3-0 victory with an 84th minute penalty. The travelling Tartan Army celebrated the win in style, and the travelling Tartan Army were subsequently recognised by UEFA for their magnificent contribution to EURO '92.
