Oasis bass guitarist Paul 'Guigsy' McGuigan and music journalist Paolo Hewitt co-wrote "The Greatest Footballer You Never Saw". The Scotland 1990 Third Retro Football Shirt might just be "The Greatest Football Shirt You Never Saw?" Unless, that is, you were present at CaVa Sounds Workshop Recording Studios in the West End of Glasgow on Sunday 22 April 1990 when The Scotland 1990 FIFA World Cup Finals Squad wore the shirt when recording "Say It With Pride". The Scotland Official World Cup Song - Italy 1990.
The shirt is a linear masterpiece with Charles Rennie MacIntosh and Archibald Leitch upfront. Hampden Roar Navy. Lord Rosebery primrose and pink. On the very first occasion Scotland wore the Rosebery colours of primrose and pink, they were captained by Andrew Watson, generally acknowledged as the world's first black international footballer, and Scotland inflicted England's biggest ever home defeat. 1-6 at the Oval cricket ground in 1881.
Three days after recording "Say It With Pride" Scotland hosted East Germany at Hampden Park when, DDR with the future 1996 Ballon d'Or winner Matthias Sammer and his Dynamo Dresden team mate Ulf Kirsten in the line-up ran out 0-1 winners courtesy of a 73rd minute penalty from BFC Dynamo midfielder Thomas Doll.
With the assistance of Fish of Marillion, Donnie Munro of Runrig, James Grant of Love and Money, Jimmie O'Neil of The Silencers, and Deacon Blue drummer Douglas Vipond, "Say It With Pride" peaked at No45 in the UK Singles Chart but, you have to think that, had Scotland worn the 1990 Scotland Third Retro Football Shirt in the opening Group C match at Italia '90, Costa Rica would never have got a look in!
