Alvin Martin joined West Ham United as an apprentice 19 August 1974. He played in the FA Youth Cup Final in 1975, and signed as a professional on 29 July 1976, making his first team debut on 18 March 1978 as a substitute at Aston Villa, and making his final appearance for West Ham on 5 May 1996 against Sheffield Wednesday. In between, Martin made 596 first-team appearances for the Hammers, placing him fifth in the Club all-time appearance list, and scored 33 goals, including a hat- trick in the 8-1 win against Newcastle United at The Boleyn Ground in April 1986, each goal being scored against a different goalkeeper!  One of only two players, along with Billy Bonds, to be awarded two testimonials by West Ham, “Stretch” won an FA Cup Winners medal and the Second Division Championship in successive seasons, 1980 and 1981, and was Hammer of the Year three times, in 1980 1982 1983.
