Kevin Phillips joined Sunderland from Watford in July 1997 for an initial fee of £325,000. ‘Super Kev’, as he became known, made an immediate impact at the Stadium of Light with 35 goals in 48 appearances in his debut campaign but, Peter Reid’s team missed out on promotion to the Premier League, losing a Wembley Play-Off to Charlton on penalties. Phillips contributed 25 goals the following season as Sunderland were crowned Football League Champions, and the following 1999-2000 season, Phillips was the Premier League top scorer with 30 goals in 38 games for Sunderland, a tally which won him the European Golden Shoe. Kevin Phillips remains the only Englishman to win the trophy. Kevin Phillips scored 130 goals in 235 appearances for Sunderland, breaking just about every club goal scoring record he could in his six seasons on Wearside.
